| Background Information on The BioBoys Movie
Treatment: Bio-Entertainment is a totally new concept in interactive entertainment. It is the application of genetic engineering, or high-tech protein chemistry to entertainment. Several researchers and medical doctors devised the concept. The three real life "BioBoys" are a surgeon, oncologist, and chemist, all avid scuba divers, the chemistry (NanoLights) has been developed to the present stage by their company, Prolume. Some of the experiences related in the story are true and have to do with actual luminescence based animals that exist in the ocean's depths. Prolume can create a special effect using this "light-emitting-water" to splash the audience with a harmless bio-molecule that emits light in the water droplets. NanoLights can be formulated in many ways and applied in many different applications, such as slimes, or light only upon contact, or fluoresce under black light conditions only to completely disappear in white light. The duration that the light is on can also be controlled. Derived from cloned marine jellyfish, NanoLights totally disappears and almost never leaves even a watermark when dry. The amount of protein required is so small that the most of the NanoLights ever contacting the person is distilled water. We are trying to promote the following concepts in our movie: FIRSTLY: genetic engineering as educational background material. We hope to familiarize the public and teach a little about biotechnology. Also, to show some of the deeper ocean's strange and unusual light emitting life forms. SECONDLY: intrigue as in the CIA, Army and combined IRS conspiracy against some College kids (the BioBoys) and their experiments. THIRDLY: the running awry of a Top Secret US Military Genetically Engineered Man (GEM) project. The entire plot degrades into the old Fifties movie, titled "The Blob" whereby the GEM start attacking people once their thirst for blood is learned. At this stage of the movie the audience feels that it is actually being attacked by the "Blob" in the theater do to the special effect of the biochemistry that each theater will be equipped with. (It will take minimal investment in the theater to cause the effect because it is done with an ordinary sprinkler system and a pump and mixing apparatus.) FINALLY: since the movie occurs between young college age adults, love triangle relationships develop and form as separate plot-lines, further emphasizing the relationships between the characters, since almost everyone has been in a love triangle, it will help with the reality of the overall effect. We have developed and are working on BioToys and the "Clone-A-Gene" game that has not been developed but should be built around the movie, (see our HYPERLINK BIOTOY and HYPERLINK http://www.prolume.com home sites). Hope that the reader will enjoy the rather simplistic overall treatment. Detail has been omitted since none of us are professional screenwriters; we are scientists that have decided to work on making "Genetic-Entertainment" a reality. Thank you, Bruce Bryan, MD CEO and Founder Prolume Ltd. |
PROTAGONISTS: BOB: 23, trim and athletic guy with a lot of energy, and the gusto to motivate people to work on his ideas. He is artistic, creative, and talented musically. He does not get very good grades in school and lacks self-discipline. He has had a hard time getting through school, but he gets by on his personality and Gary's patient tutelage on night-before cram sessions. Bob is wildly romantic, falls in love easy, and is almost Elizabethan in his approach to romance. He is at UCLA working towards a Ph.D. in biotech. He is the originator of the idea to use biotech in toy applications and is trying to build a squirt gun and other toys so that he can fund his research without having to apply for government grants, or work for universities, in the future. GARY: 24, very husky build, very strong, brown hair and rounded smiling face. He has been Bob's lifelong friend since elementary school. Gary has always had stellar academic performance; he's been exceptionally quick at difficult concepts, namely physics, calculus, and biochemistry at UCLA. He is also working in the same lab as Bob and frequently bails Bob out by having the discipline to get the job done. As children growing up, Bob usually had the idea to do something, e.g. scuba diving, hiking and camping midwinter at Yosemite on cross country skis, etc. Gary always carried the heaviest pack and made Bob's dream reality by going along with him. Both Gary and Bob realize the incredible beauty of nature and have spent a lot of time in nature and share the joys, despite the hassles of being there, no matter where or when, nor how uncomfortable. RANDY: the boy genius, also at UCLA, with his own lab at 20. He receives a Ph.D. in Chemistry from a Nobel Laureate at 19 and has a large lab with every kind of imaginable device. He is great at electronics, organic chemistry, computers, and can rig or wire anything in an instant. He too has bought into the idea of making biotechnology available to the mass markets and wants to help with the plan. KATHY: A devout Christian, with very long brown hair and deep blue eyes. She is a straight A student at UCLA, she met Bob during her undergraduate years at UCLA. Kathy is a crackerjack marine biologist and is working on deep-sea light emitting creatures. Bob fell in love with her when he glanced down the first row of math class and has been trying to get her into bed ever since. Kathy has other plans, realizing Bob's ways, she thinks that he is too undisciplined to amount to much, she decides to try to reform him. She has him going to Church on Sundays, in an attempt to moralize him. She makes it very hard for Bob to satisfy his desires but she wants to help the BioBoys. She works in a lab down the hall from Bob and Gary. She eventually succumbs to him while they are alone in the depths of a submarine. NORA: 24, dazzling green-eyed blonde. She is working towards her masters in genetics. She was intellectually precocious as a child and is very advanced. She changed fields after working on the genetics of optical systems. She knows a lot about human eye structure and function and has a physics background in optics. Now she is interested in photoreceptors of deep-sea creatures. She met Gary at a party and has loved his brains and his determination. She falls all over him only to be rebuffed into friendship, which she takes as crumbs. Gary is interested in his science and secretly loves Kathy, but does not want Bob to know his inner feelings due to his long lasting friendship lifetime friendship to Bob. LISA: 27, a busty Washington reporter, dead set on getting the goods and exposing the government. She is tough, does not know a lot about science, but majored in Communications and Journalism at Wheaton. She comes from a well to do family and her father is a rich military-industrialist who often gets flack from the Government for his daughter's expose. She meets up with Randy and off they go, later in the plot. ANTAGONIST DR. DEMONIC: 50, one armed cross between, Dr. No and Dr. Strangelove. He is in charge of the development of the Genetically Engineered Man (GEM) Project, a joint Department of Defense, CIA, secret project. A successful and mortifyingly highly intelligent and resourceful scientist/coordinator. He has no scruples when it comes to achieving his mission and will kill or maim (has bad habit of getting joy out of pulling the wings off butterflies). He will destroy or neutralize anything that comes in the way of his mission. Sadly he is one of the first to be taken out when the GEM go awry. |
![]() The movie is set in time not long after the release of Spielberg's "Jaws." Bob and Gary have been avid scuba divers for several years but have never gone night diving. The release of "Jaws" has had some effect on the fear of both Bob and Gary, even though they won't admit it. OPENING SCENE: WEST LOS ANGELES: Gary is at home watching Monday Night Football. The score is close, Bob knocks on the door and tells Gary to gather his gear, the red tide is up, and they are going night diving. Gary is excited about the game, and Bob, totally not interested in sports, insists that they go diving, now! Bob proceeds to load Gary's scuba gear into the car. Off they go up Pacific Coast Highway to Zuma Beach at 11PM. ZUMA BEACH, CA: They take the last hits off the roach, and head for the water with their gear loaded on their backs. It's cold and dark. The water is ominous in appearance, with the wave's bright bluish light with each crest and break, foaming light. Gary and Bob find an easy entry and navigate the breaking waves. Down they go, but instead of finding darkness they find millions of stars, the ocean is a glow with blue twinkling light. They each emit trails of light sparkles as the red tide organisms flow past them and are irritated to emit light by their fin wakes. The bubbles from their regulators emit clouds of light as they float to the surface. A million trails of particulate light is given off as a school of grunion pass through the boys, during their descent. Before them is a very brightly luminescent large jellyfish, they easily capture and take back to the lab for cloning experiments. Bob and Gary are pretty far off the shore and they have their flashlights off and are tripping to the lights when all of a sudden a large tube of light flashes between them at very high speed. Caught off guard fear grips them and they head for the surface. Unable to communicate with each other underwater, their thoughts of "OH SHIT" what was that? As the stream of high speed light passes close to them again and narrowly misses them. They surface trembling, their flashlights pointed out to sea, and nothing is to be seen. They decide to synchronize their fin beats and head arm in arm back to shore, pretending to be a whale. Each one hiding behind the other, Bob thinking he's the small one, he'll be eaten first. They start humming the theme from the movie, "Jaws,"; the effect of the tune makes them laugh. Luckily they make it to shore, their jellyfish intact. They head back to the lab with their capture. They thank their luck that they are alive and not missing limbs or life. Bob is especially thankful because he was the most likely prey! SOMEWHERE IN MARYLAND, A SECRET ARMY RESEARCH (ARL) LAB: DR. DEMONIC wants a progress report and update on the GEM project. He decides that the GEM need night vision capabilities and insists that the molecular engineers clone the best photoreceptors possible into them. He finds that the only creatures on the planet, other than pit vipers, that are capable of seeing far red light are a very rare deep-sea fish called "Aristo." Not only can the Aristo see infrared light they also have light organs that make it under their eyes. The have adapted this to see their unsuspecting prey since none of the deep-water shrimp can see red light. These fish have extremely sensitive night vision and DR. DEMONIC wants those eyes cloned and the night vision illumination as tools for the GEM. He leaves in a rage when the scientists tell him that the deep-sea creatures are very rare and the genes will be months to obtain if at all. POINT OF PLOT: DR DEMONIC is also told that there is only one enemy of the Aristo's, that is a jellyfish that preferentially feeds on them and is found near them, about 1,500 feet down. DR DEMONIC reviews the organ systems of the GEM and the skeletal structures. He decides that they should be empowered with the unique ability to fuse into amorphous globs so that bullets will pass through them and if injured they can reform and fuse to get through spaces and flow through door cracks and windows, as a viscous liquid. He sends the scientist to contact the Navy, and submarines are shortly thereafter dragging nets from torpedo vents, in the depths. They try to capture the Aristos - no luck. SOMEWHERE OFF THE CALIFORNIA COAST: A research vessel, the R/V Yellowfin, is lowering a submarine with Bob and Kathy in it. Randy, Gary, and Nora are aboard the vessel. Bob and Kathy are attempting to maneuver the sub, at 1,500 feet, to capture some light emitting fish for cloning experiments. Nora wants to study and clone the eye receptors. Randy is manning the submarine electronics. Gary is awaiting the fish so that he can dissect the light emitting organs. Gary also is making a serious play for Nora. She rebuffs him because he is too similar to her, a nerd. She has the hots for Bob's free spirit. Alone in the sub with Kathy, Bob turns off the subs exterior lights; the only cockpit illumination is red light. They sit in darkness and Bob tells Kathy how much he loves her, she passes him off since she is there to collect some fish. They sit in the darkness and watch all the luminous creatures wonder by, waiting for any kind of light emitting fish. They see a few and Bob practices maneuvering the sub so as to collect them in subs pressure vessels by suction. Several hours go by and Kathy starts to get tired and bored. Bob sees his chance and makes his play for her. She pushes him off a few times but succumbs to his kisses. They get a little passionate; Bob just gets a feel of something nice, when Kathy notices something red appearing in the darkness. She identifies it as an Aristo. Bob comes to his senses, pissed but excited. It is a large Aristo making a beautiful display of red light. It is obviously attracted to the sub's red light and nuzzles the sub peering in. Bob and Kathy can barely contain themselves; Bob carefully maneuvers the sub and captures the Aristo, a great specimen of one of the rarest fish in the sea. Bob is really happy since it was during their lovemaking that the fish was attracted. They surface as Randy screams at them for having their communications turned off. Everyone wonders what they are doing down there for so long and why the com was turned off? BOB AND GARY'S LAB, UCLA: The group gets the tissue into the processing equipment after placing it in liquid nitrogen on the ship. They all decide to party after the capture of the Aristo. This fish, and their other captures is a stroke of luck. Not only does the fish enable the BioBoys to make a red light-emitting squirt gun and other toys, it also has vast medical applications that could mean more funding. Red light passes furthest through the body's tissues and can make tumor imaging possible, the main purpose of their research grant, that is rapidly running out, due to the high cost of submarine time and ship rental. GARY'S HOUSE: At the party Gary makes another pass at Nora but she rebuffs him again. She later makes a play for Bob when Kathy is not around. Kathy, seems to like the seriousness of Gary and admires him. Gary and Kathy go off and have a serious discussion about the future work schedule, amorous innuendoes develop. Bob, somewhat loose by too much beer, kisses Nora and she responds. They head off into a back room and only get so far before the group starts to dissipate, thwarting their attempts but heightening their lust. Randy is passed out on the couch; he was seasick and exhausted from too much sun, sea, and beer. BOB'S LAB, UCLA: Working on the cloning project several obstacles are overcome. RNA is extracted and it looks good. Nora discovers the reasons for the red receptor sensitivity of the Aristo. She begins cloning experiments on the red receptors. Bob and Gary are extremely pleased; they got good RNA from their night-swim, jellyfish. They prepare to send this off to Start-A-Gene Corp. in Seattle for the major stages of genetic library formation, the first step in cloning genes. Start-A-Gene Corp. is the best in the world at making libraries of animal genes for scientists and they do this in a Seattle based state-of-the-art production facility. Most of the researchers in the U.S. and the National Health Institute use their facilities as well. Making genetic libraries is painstaking and no one wants to bother. Even the GEM project scientists have their gene libraries made at Start-A-Gene under coded alias names and by AKA-named scientists. (Dr. Demonic is no stranger to Dr. Jeff Sword, the CEO of Start-A-Gene. They both were friends in medical school, turned mortal enemies when they had a falling out over the same women. Dr. Sword ended up marrying her and Dr. Demonic awaits his revenge.) Gary and Bob prepare the RNA for shipment to Start-A-Gene. A fax comes in from Washington, DC. A Friend of Bob's at the FDA Office of Women's Affairs has registered him to attend a conference, not just any conference, but a technology transfer conference. It seems that the women in Washington, DC under the influence of the First Lady, have insisted that the military do something about Breast Cancer Imaging. She has nagged her husband, the President, to instruct the Joint Chief of Staff and the Departments of Energy, NASA, the Army Research Laboratory, and CIA image computing group to make available to physicians and other interested researchers, all the computer algorithms and imaging technology that each of these departments has, classified or not! Bob finds himself at a high level meeting in Washington a few weeks later. He runs into several of the technology transfer people in Washington, he'd like to have the best red imagining technology since he was bragging about capturing and cloning an Aristo at luncheon with a table full of CIA, ARL, and several other ears. Unknown to him at the time, the CIA technology transfer operative informed Dr. Demonic of the news. He even told Dr. Demonic that the library was at Start-A-Gene, being made now. START-A-GENE LABS, SEATTLE: It is late one night and a peculiar break in occurs. No alarms go off. Nothing is found missing but many of the test tubes are mysteriously tampered with when the lab is opened the next day. This happens for several nights running. The CIA has been visiting Start-A-Gene and has been looking for the Aristo clone. Due to timing, an early AM transfer is required; one of the researchers finds the CIA operative in the lab pilfering her lab space. She is the one working on the Aristo clone. She is asked for the clone and she switches the tubes and hands the phony one to the CIA. She informs Dr. Sword the next day. She also emails Gary at his UCLA lab peculiar, why would anyone else want the clone? Bob tells Gary about the Washington, DC meeting and they figure out that someone in the Government needs that clone very badly, but why? DR DEMONIC'S OFFICE, WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Demonic discovers that the library has been switched and is not the right library. He contacts Dr. Sword, demanding the Aristo library, but Dr. Sword does not play along. Dr. Demonic organizes the IRS under the direction of the CIA as national security to sequester all Start-A-Gene's libraries on trumped up charges of tax evasion. He removes them all and discredits Start-A-Gene publicly, revenge is so sweet. Dr. Demonic allows the lab to finish its current workload, since his scientists are awaiting genetic libraries as well as others. He did not realize it but the switched Aristo library was back in the hands of the BioBoys. Tipped off the BioBoys are working feverishly to isolate the red light emitting clone. They succeed but it is too late. Dr. Demonic discovers the whereabouts of the clone and pulls all the funding by emptying their computer grant account, and then he has the police arrest the BioBoys on trumped up charges of drug making in the UCLA lab. The BioBoys are discredited and are forced to release the clone to unknown operatives. Busted, down and out, they lick their wounds and figure what next to do. The only way of funding themselves is with BioToys, luckily they still have late night access to Nora's lab. They continue with their jellyfish cloning experiments and see a brilliant flash of light. They have discovered a new light emitter, in blue. Gary and Kathy get a little closer, since it was Gary's fine work that produced the clone, she is impressed. Bob feels a little lost, he loves Kathy, but doesn't hurt too much since he has Nora, but still wants Kathy. Randy is lost by all that has been going on, he has his own lab and has only been there to help. He decides to call Dr. Sword to find out what has really been happening. He finds out that it was Dr. Demonic behind it. He and Dr. Sword find it peculiar that Dr. Demonic would allow them to complete the work in progress. Randy asks for a list of all the libraries in current production by researcher. Randy does exhaustive computer searching and discovers that there is a pattern to the alias registry, he suspects a code and cracks it. He informs Dr. Sword of the details. This tie in with Dr. Demonic explains why the BioBoys have lost their funding and have been discredited. Dr. Sword now decides that he'll have a little fun with Dr. Demonic, he randomly switches genes and libraries on ARL researchers, knowing that this will alter the outcomes of many cloning experiments. ARL LABS, MARYLAND: Dr. Demonic has the light emitter but still needs the receptor, the only thing remaining to complete the GEM. He finds out that Nora is the world leader in eye receptors, he doesn't know that she is down the hall from the BioBoys and her libraries were at Start-A-Gene at the same time as the BioBoys. He contacts her via a group of clandestine physicians searching for better Breast Tumor Imaging. Dr. Demonic goes through great pains to engage her voluntary support and manages to get large amount of funding for her lab. (Finding herself awash in money she helps the BioBoys with their cloning and BioToy development. Alien Crystals, small globs of glowing soft polymers are the first BioToy launch product. This is very successful and the BioBoys are inundated with orders.) NORA'S LAB, UCLA: Meanwhile, Nora is kept in the dark about the real purpose of her optic receptor. She gets a little worried when the physicians try to pressure her to work harder. She engages Gary, whom she knows can get the job done, to help her, but she does this with a heavy feeling of worry for the purpose. Gary, happy with the toy success, is only glad to help Nora. Many long hours in the lab force them into late night conversations and frustrations. The frustrations lead them to a passionate affair in the lab. Once this occurs, Kathy is out of Gary's picture and Bob is out of Nora's. ARL LAB, MARYLAND: Nora clones the red-sensitive visual receptor and they share the information and clone with the so-called alias Breast researchers. These end up in the hands of the ARL. Dr. Demonic can finally complete his GEM. The first cloned GEM are being born out of the cow bellies now. Since they are full-grown in less than 10 months, they need a large animal that can birth a 160-pound GEM. Cows are used for this purpose since they are cheap and accessible. Many Gems are created and tested at the ARL. They are preserved at very low temperatures until needed due to the cloning of a certain fish antifreeze protein that was incorporated into their architecture. The GEM prove very smart and resourceful. They are very energetic in their lust for battle. The ARL begins testing of their fusion abilities. ARL releases two of them at the same time. They meet and fuse. Not wanting to be re-suspended, they are smart enough to spew a small glob of tissue unseen by the researchers. This glob starts to consume any organic matter and starts to grow. It hangs around the ARL and gradually grows until it attacks a soldier. It takes over the soldier's identity after it consumes him. It then releases the other GEMs and they escape. At first they were programmed not to attack humans unless a certain hormone was vaporized in the air, but Dr. Sword, switched the genes. Now they are learning to consume the local military personnel, slow and methodical, with gusto! LISA'S HOME, WASHINGTON, D.C.: Lisa, (whose father at dinner mentions something funny at ARL), gets wind of the story and goes to Maryland to investigate. She notices something very strange about the military security. Convinced that something serious is happening she comes back at night with an Infrared night vision scope. She is surprised to see that all of the military personnel have light emission coming form their heads. The whole base is infiltrated with the GEM and they are running the ARL Maryland base. She leaks the story to the Post. Her Editor thinks she is crazy giving time for the CIA to cover it. Dr. Demonic is sent to investigate, not believing anything has gone awry, he barges right in shouting orders and is shortly consumed by globular proteins, dies a hideous death of partial digestion. The GEM that consumes him gets an upset stomach and has to get relief from Alka-Seltzer. Lisa realizes that something fishy is going on, with such severe security cover-up. She does some Internet research and comes across the infrared vision receptor used in Breast Imaging. She contacts Nora at UCLA. She explains the situation and is given the light frequency of the receptor that can't be seen, and she is told to go back and observe using the modified scope. Nora explains to Lisa what the use of the receptor is. Since Nora is not good at technology, Randy is sent to investigate with Lisa. The two become allies and there is an immediate attraction between them. Lisa arms herself and heads back to the ARL with Randy for some night observation, they observe the GEM attacking a dog and consuming it. This scares them, they are discovered, she shoots the GEM, but to no avail. They barely make their getaway in her car. She calls Nora and explains. Gary told of the news by Nora, suddenly all makes sense, it's the work of Dr. Demonic. The situation is serious, news wires are mum, and meanwhile people are disappearing never to be seen or heard from again. Suddenly Lisa convinces her editor that the public must be informed and the news breaks. He keeps it under wraps because of the panic that would ensue. The GEM find their new globular freedom and consumption exhilarating. They escape to several small towns in the outskirts of Maryland. They lay low and partially organize, building a communications network. Some fuse and organize into large Blobs and at night start to consume animals as large as cows and horses. The taste of human blood is the most closely aligned with them and they transcend to fierce attack and consumption. Growing ever more powerful day by day. They do no come out in bright sun; it interferes with their sensitive receptors, making them more difficult to capture. R/V YELLOWFIN: Bob realizes that the only hope may be to clone a jellyfish protein from the natural enemy of the Aristo. He and Kathy find themselves back in the sub again. They are stressed to the max. Several hours go by and they can't seem to find the right jellyfish. In frustration they touch each other, Kathy still a virgin, thinks that this may be the end of the world. Bob looks at her and professes his undying love, proposes marriage, she finally breaks down and the front seat of the sub will have to do. Bob feels invigorated, goes for another attempt at finding the jellyfish and manages to capture three of them in a breeding frenzy. They surface, this time they left the com on accidentally, and Gary and Nora were turned on by the conversation. They were up in the remote observing room having fun as well. NORA'S UCLA LAB: They begin work on cloning. Calls are made to Dr. Sword who puts what remains of his full crew on the task and they pull a library together in less then 72 hours. The clones are screened against known Aristo optic tissue from Nora's lab. After about 10 days they discover the clone containing an enzyme that will disrupt the GEM visual system. They also look for a clone that will contain the digestive enzyme from the jellyfish. They ferment huge quantities of this material as rapidly as possible. Dr. Sword assists them pulling all the stops. SMALL TOWN, MARYLAND: The town High School Auditorium is attacked by the GEM. They seep through the ceiling and attack the kids during a driver's education movie. The whole class runs out screaming. [It is at this point that the NanoLights are sprayed on the audience in our specially rigged theaters, within the splash zone.] RESOLUTION BIOBOYS EN ROUTE TO MARLAND: The local fire department tank trucks are loaded with the enzymes. At night, infrared emitting lights are placed to attract the GEM. Once attracted the GEM are eradicated with the spray. CLOSING SCENE ABOARD THE R/V YELLOWFIN: The BioBoys are heroes for saving the day. Start-A-Gene is found innocent of tax evasion. The BioToys are popular and the BioBoys are well funded. Randy gets Lisa, Bob gets Kathy, and Nora and Gary are aboard another research vessel. This time, Nora and Gary left the com on and there is a myriad of light emitting fish all around them watching their passion. |
